Funding future pensions through investment

The Local Government Pension Scheme is a funded scheme. This means the Pension Fund holds assets in readiness for paying out benefits as they fall due. Because most of the benefits won’t be paid out for many years, and the Fund already receives enough income from contributions and some of its investments to cover current pension payments, it can invest nearly all of its assets for long-term growth. This helps earn more money over time and lowers the financial burden on the employers who contribute to the Fund.

The Fund's investment strategy is set by the Pension Committee and can be viewed in the Fund's Investment Strategy statement . The Fund uses an Asset Pool, currently Brunel Pensions Partnership, to implement the majority of its strategy via investments managers.
