For Councillors: Introduction to the LGPS

Welcome to the LGPS!

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is now open to Councillors of Local Government Authorities from 11 May 2026 with new entry applying from the start of the next payroll period (1 June 2026).

It is designed to provide financial security in retirement for all members, and includes a range of flexible and protective benefits:

A secure, inflation-linked pension.
Tax relief on contributions.
Flexible payment options to suit your financial situation.
Protection for your family in case of death or serious illness.
Retirement flexibility, including early and late retirement

Eligibility

If you are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme with Gloucestershire Pension Fund if:

you are under the age of 75;
you are an elected member of one or more of the following authorities: Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucester City Council, Cheltenham Borough Council, Forest of Dean District Council, Stroud District Council, Tewkesbury Borough Council or Cotswold District Council.

You can join the Scheme by completing an Opt in form

If you are an elected member in more than one role, you will receive a separate pension in relation to each role.

Starting your new role

You will receive a scheme summary leaflet from your relevant authority upon becoming an elected member.
